All you have to do is take a look at Instagram, Facebook or Youtube to see that we have thousands of beautiful places to SUP. From beaches to islands and beautiful lakes, some of these places are only dreams due to how far they are, how expensive it is or even just the time frame you have to get away. But, you do not have to travel far to paddle some of the most beautiful waters in the country. Missouri and Arkansas offer some of the most beautiful waters to paddle in the world. I am not exaggerating this by saying that. The Ozark Mountains and Dammed rivers form beautiful lakes with very calm waters.
Bull Shoals Lake which runs through Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas is one of these lakes that look like something out of a magazine. This last in a chain of 3 lakes that the White River forms, Bull Shoals Lake is a flood lake, which means it is used to control river runoff and storm waters that can cause the upper Lake Taneycomo and Table Rock Lake to flood. The cool thing about this type of lake is you can’t build close to the water. The lake level can fluctuate so much that homes built close to the water would always be at risk at flooding. This leaves the shorelines of the lake natural and pristine. The north end of Bull Shoals offers extremely calm water. There is not much boating traffic on the lake, nothing like you would see on lakes closer to urban type areas. Typically the only wake you will see is wake caused by wind.
One of the best places to SUP on Bull Shoals is a short 9 Mile drive from Downtown Branson Mo, 38 Paddle at K-Dock Marina. This tiny marina offers more than most huge marinas on more populated lakes. 38 Paddle offers Paddleboard rentals and lessons throughout the summer and early fall. Growing in popularity is their full moon paddles. Every full moon during the summer 38 Paddle host’s a full moon paddle where you can either rent a board for the night from them or bring your own. With water activities including SUP Hurdles, and Gladiator Jousting to Live Music the full moon paddles offer a unique experience on a beautiful lake.
If you have your own board and paddling at night is not your thing don’t worry, Next to K Dock Marina is a public boat ramp where you can drop your board in and get to exploring. About a half mile to the west is K-Dock Marina where during the summer you can paddle in and enjoy some of the best breakfast you can buy. Once your back on the water you can explore coves and cliff and enjoy one of the cleanest lakes in the midwest. It almost feels like it’s your own private lake.
So if you are looking at those Instagram Photos and you are dreaming of that perfect place to paddle and you think you won’t ever be able to go to one of those places, think again. Give Bull Shoals a try, you will not be disappointed. If you are wanting to make it a weekend out of paddling there is even a free campground about a half mile from the boat ramp. If you don’t have a paddle board and you have always wanted to give it a try, give 38 Paddle a call and Jen or Jacob will be happy to rent you a board and give you professional SUP instructions so your first SUP experience will be the gateway to your new drug “Stand Up Paddleboarding”. Once you hit the water of Bull Shoals you will be addicted and if your an experienced paddler looking for a new destination then the 740 miles of shoreline will give you all the exploration you crave.
